30 Characters Challenge

All this month I’ll be participating in the 30 characters challenge! It’s like a NaNoWriMo for comics creators. The idea is that every day for a month you create a new character! It’s that simple!

I’m really excited to participate, it should let me create new material and some quick, fun, art; also it will allow me to deliver content to you folks on a regular basis.

Are you intrigued?
Here’s the website.
Here’s my intro post.
Here’s my first character: Fredneck.
Here’s the RSS Feed for the site
Here’s the RSS Feed for just my posts.

There’s a lot of very talented people participating, over 150! I’m excited to see all the cool things that get created.

Hey, man, what the heck?

You may have noticed that Jimmy and the Hammer has slipped into an update schedule ranging from erratic to nonexistent.

I’ve been uncharacteristically quiet on the subject too, and the reason is that I didn’t want to say anything until I had something definitive to say, and I wanted to make sure the problems I was having weren’t short term. So I took some time to think about it, but I still don’t have something definitive to add, so here’s my best shot:

Jimmy and the Hammer will continue to update erratically, without warning for the foreseeable future. It is not ending.

How did I get here? Well, with issue 4, I focused very intently on getting pages out twice a week, no misses, no excuses. And I succeeded! That’s good, right? Yes and no. I wound up having a lot of late nights bumping up against deadlines, quickly drawing pages the day before they were “due”. I was enjoying myself, but I feel the quality suffered a bit, and the pages just weren’t up to a standard I was happy with.

So for issue 5, I took another path. Instead of an internal emphasis on timeliness, I put the internal emphasis on quality, pushing both my writing and my art to levels heretofore unseen on Jimmy and the Hammer. And on the few updates you’ve seen thus far, it really showed.

But I ran into a new problem: the art was taking 2-3 times as long to do, and it was not a fun process for me any more. Rather than my previous process, which was basically “doodle doodle doodle it’s a face”, I now had a time consuming, incredibly detail oriented, meticulous process that felt like work. The joy and creativity of the process was gone.

I was in a position where I was spending a large chunk of my free time working on a project I wasn’t enjoying, and why? I was making no money, I wasn’t really gaining fans outside of people I know personally, and it wasn’t really internally satisfying like it used to be. So why keep doing it?

All logic was telling me it was time to throw in the towel, but my heart wouldn’t let me. I had some misplaced sense: maybe loyalty, maybe stubbornness, that just would not quit. And even though I couldn’t quantify what the value is, it became clear to me that this project still has value.

So here’s where I ended up. It may feel like work, but it’s worthwhile, and I will try to work on this every day. It may be drawing new pages, it may be getting old pages ready to print, it may be fixing html on the site (which is sorely overdue) or it may be writing. But rest assured, whether there are results that are visible to you or not, I will continue working on this.

I’m going to try to keep doing about a page a week, but it will continue to update erratically without warning, so I recommend either subscribing to my RSS feed or following me on twitter, so you don’t miss a page.

And Jimmy and the Hammer will continue until at least a semi-satisfying ending. It won’t leave you hanging mid storyline. That’s a promise. It may take a while to get there, but I won’t leave you hanging.

There may be some other announcements in the future, I still don’t know what form they will take.

Most importantly: to the fans who have found me and stuck with me through this all, thank you. Every comment, tweet, or email expressing how much you’ve enjoyed what I’ve done so far has made everything worthwhile.

24 Hour Comic Book Day

Sorry for the lack of updates this week. Life totally got in the way. Back to normal next week. But I am about to make it up to you! Tomorrow (Saturday, October 2nd) I will be participating in 24 Hour Comic Book Day!

http://www.24hourcomicsday.com/

The idea behind the event is twofold. Creating a comic book in a single day to see what deadlines can do for creativity, and having a social appearance for interaction with fans and other creators.

Well, I won’t be making a new comic from scratch. I’ll be working on Jimmy and the Hammer (though I may wander off and work on the Moongazer a bit). And I likely won’t be there for the full 24 hours. But I should be able to do enough that I can get ahead again.

But the second part is what really appealed to me. I will be hanging out all day in the Lets Draw Stuff chatroom at: http://www.letsdrawstuff.com/draw along with many other talented creators. And the genius of it all is you can come watch us draw, hang out, talk with us all, and have a generally awesomesauce time!

So once again, come hang out with me and watch me create the strip, tomorrow, October 2nd, at http://letsdrawstuff.com/draw ! I’ll be there as much as I am awake for, but I should be there at least from noon to midnight. I’ll also be twittering my experiences throughout the day, so if you can’t make it in person, be sure to follow me on twitter: @jathevan.

See you tomorrow!

Server Troubles

To anybody who has had trouble accessing the site the past couple weeks, either with slowness or a complete inability to load the page whatsoever, I apologize.

I’m working with my host to get problems resolved. Though I’m now seeing some errors popping up on the site. So things may get worse before they get better. In that case, I am sorry!

Bear with me, I promise to get this all sorted out soon.

EDIT: Good news! Looks like I fixed it. Bad news! My style got kind of screwed up in the process. I’ll be working on that as well. Let me know if you find broken stuff.

Webcomic Pusher: Beginnings and Endings

by jathevan on September 13, 2010 at 10:14 am

Last week was a pretty big week for webcomics, one cool new webcomic launched, and one of my favorites has ended. So I’m going to point you in the direction of both.

My friend Ange just launched her webcomic Inscribing Ardi. There’s only a few pages up so far, but they are so darn pretty you’ll be instantly hooked. And she’s let me peek ahead in her story a bit, and it’s pretty interesting stuff. Ange also just helped me work on a new logo for Jimmy and the Hammer which I’ll be debuting on Friday with the Issue 5 cover. She’s incredibly talented, and this comic promises to keep you entertained for a long time to come.

The other comic I’m pushing is Tyler James’ Over. It’s a story about a guy going through the aftermath of a particularly painful breakup, and coming to terms with how his life will look moving forward. And despite that downer of a description, it’s consistently funny. It’s only about 160 pages so you should be able to read it all in one sitting. Also worth noting, he’s currently auctioning off his original art from the strip for dirt cheap this week. I just bought page 1 for myself, but there is plenty of other stuff available to buy! Just don’t delay because I think the last auction ends this Friday.

So read these comics. I love them both and I have awesome taste.
